Norway. Historical fiction (17th century). Winter 1617. The sea around the remote island of Vardø is thrown into a vicious storm. A young woman watches as the men of the island, out fishing, perish in an instant. Vardø is now a place of women and they must learn to survive by themselves. 18 months later a sinister figure arrives. Absalom Cornet, has been summoned to bring the women to heel. He brings with him his young wife who, encounters something she has never experienced before – independent women. But where she finds happiness and love, her husband sees only a place flooded with a terrible evil which he must root out at all costs.

His quest to unlock the past takes him on a long journey from Norway to the Shetlands and the battlefields of France and a very unusual inheritance.

Sweden. For most of the year the town is under a blanket of snow, its isolation meaning that it has been shrinking every year. But now the town is on the verge of revival – a bright new future just around the corner. Until the day it is put in jeopardy by a single brutal act. It divides the town into those who think it should be hushed up and those who’ll risk the future to see justice done. At last it falls to one young man to find the courage to speak the truth that it seems no one else wants to hear.
